Thunderbirds Fall to Eagles at the Pullar in West Division Matchup

In Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, the fifth place (10-7-2) Soo Eagles hosted their cross border the third place (13-7-2-1) Soo Thunderbirds in a midweek west division NOJHL contest at the Pullar Stadium on Wednesday, November 16th.

3:43 into the opening period, Jack Paweski slides the Eagles first goal of the game under a sprawling Thunderbird netminder Landon Miller to give the Eagles a 1 – 0 lead. Gavin Rozema notched the lone helper on Paweski’s fifth of the season. With Brian Fiddes in the right faceoff, Colin Handy fires a pass to Fiddes to rifle a snapshot over Miller’s catcher at 8:55 of the second to bring the Eagles lead to 2 – 0. Coby Fox drew the other assist on Fiddes powerplay marker. With the Eagles on a two on one, Teig Driessen slides the third goal under Miller who was laying across the Thunderbirds’ crease to increase the hosts lead to 3 – 0. Fox added the contributor on Driessen’s second of the season at 13:05. With 3:06 remaining in the second, Zachary Briskey gives the Eagles a 4 – 0 lead with sliding a powerplay goal under Miller’s pad at the 16:54 mark of the second. Jack Mortson and Nolan Hendry had the helpers on Briskey’s fourth of the season.  With the Thunderbirds on a powerplay at 7:26 of the third, Jackson Truchan sinks his twelfth of the season from in front of Eagle goaltender Logan Raffaele’s net to close the gap to three for the visitors. Sam Lake drew the lone assist on Truchan’s powerplay goal. With the Thunderbirds on a four minute powerplay, veteran Michael Chaffay rifles a shot from the right blueline to find the back of Raffaele’s net. Chaffay’s seventh goal of the season was unassisted on the Thunderbirds second goal of the contest at 12:03 of the third. Sault Ste Marie, Ontario’s Michael Starzomski sinks the insurance goal at 16:27 to give the Eagles a 5 – 2 win. Michael Szlag assists on Starzomski’s first goal as an Eagle.  Logan Raffaele stopped 27 of 29 shots in the Eagles win while Landon Miller turned away 25 of 30 in the Thunderbirds eighth loss of the season.

Both the Eagles and Thunderbirds are on the road for their next game with the Eagles facing the Hearst Lumberjacks on Friday, November 18th while the Thunderbirds travel to Elliot Lake on November 16th to meet the Red Wings.
