The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) announced Monday, February 16th that defenceman Spencer Horgan (Greater Sudbury Cubs); forward Carter Drigo (Espanola Paper Kings) and goaltender Nathan Maguire (Soo Thunderbirds) have been named its Three Stars of the Week for the period ending February 15.
Spencer Horgan, (D) Greater Sudbury Cubs – A record-setting week saw the veteran blueliner establish a new NOJHL mark for most career points by a defenceman with 212.
The 20-year-old rearguard from Bowmanville, Ontario set the feat this past Thursday with a three-assist night on home ice in another victory for the league-leading Cubs.
Horgan, who played U18 AAA hockey previously with the Quinte Red Devils program, tops all NOJHL D-men in offensive production this season, having amassed 56 points in 37 contests, which includes 15 multi-point performances.
Carter Drigo, (F) Espanola Paper Kings – Drigo was firing on all cylinders over the weekend as he scored seven of the eight goals Espanola had, helping the Paper Kings secure a playoff spot.
An alumnus of both the Sudbury Wolves and Sudbury Nickel Capitals organizations in the Great North U18 Hockey League, the 18-year-old from Lively, Ontario notched all three of his club’s markers Friday in a road setback at Powassan, then banged in four more in a triumph versus the Soo Eagles Saturday at the Regional Recreation Complex.
Drigo’s tally parade of late has seen him move all the way up to eighth-best in the NOJHL in that department with 27 and has banged in a dozen goals in his past four outings.
Nathan Maguire, (G) Soo Thunderbirds – A stellar start for the 18-year-old rookie netminder for his hometown Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario squad saw him halt the rival Soo Eagles 11-game unbeaten streak, that featured 10 wins and a tie, with a 30-save 3-0 shutout Friday night.
Maguire, who played U18 AAA hockey on both sides of the border in the Soo, prior to arriving in the NOJHL, has played extremely well for the Thunderbirds in his initial year in the Jr. A ranks.
Boasting a solid 12-1-0-1 record with the Thunderbirds, Maguire sits second in both goals-against average and save percentage among all league stoppers at 2.20 and .924 respectively, with two shutouts.
