Riding the momentum of a 3–1 win on Sunday, January 4th at the John Rhodes Centre, the second-place Superior Heights Steelhawks (9-4-1) continued their strong play on Tuesday, January 6th with a matchup against the fifth-place CASS Huskies (2-9-1-1) at the Northern Community Centre in Sault Ste. Marie High School Hockey League action. Entering the contest, the Steelhawks were tied in points with the first-place St. Mary’s Knights at 19 points, adding extra importance to the matchup.
Superior Heights came out flying in the opening period, as Avery Fowler opened the scoring at 10:42, finishing a play set up by Ty Cond and Ayden Hamilton. Just over a minute later, the Steelhawks doubled their lead on the powerplay when Austin Oliver notched his 12th of the season, again assisted by Cond and Hamilton, to make it 2–0 after one.
The Steelhawks continued to apply pressure in the second period, extending their lead with goals from Ryan Oliver, scoring his first of the season, and Chase Cerasuolo, giving Superior Heights a commanding 4–0 advantage heading into the third.
CASS mounted a comeback attempt in the final frame, scoring three straight powerplay goals in just over eight minutes to cut the deficit to one. Austin Finlayson and Logan McAulay, who scored twice in the period, fueled the Huskies’ push. Superior Heights responded when Curtis Johnson restored the two-goal cushion with a powerplay marker at 3:28, assisted by Fowler and Cond, before Alex Hoffe sealed the 6–3 victory with a late goal.
Peter Gartshore earned the win in goal for the Steelhawks, while Jack Unetic turned in a solid effort between the pipes for the Huskies.
The Huskies will look to rebound on Thursday, January 8th, when they host the White Pines Wolverines at Desbarats Arena with a 1:00 p.m. start. The Steelhawks and Huskies will meet again on Sunday, January 11th, with puck drop scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at the John Rhodes Centre.
