At the Rankin Arena on Wednesday, November 19th, the Superior Heights Steelhawks opened the 2025 Sault Ste Marie High School Girls Hockey League season with a commanding performance, skating to a decisive victory over the St Mary’s Knights. The afternoon featured an explosion of offence from Superior Heights, highlighted by hat tricks from both Lillian Rumiel and Alexe Villebrum in the convincing win.
The Steelhawks wasted no time setting the tone. At 11:58 of the first, Rumiel struck unassisted for her first of the season. Less than two minutes later, Lucy Curran added to the lead with her first of the campaign, assisted by Calista Hodkinson. Superior Heights continued to pour on the pressure as Fiona Prophet scored unassisted at 3:46, followed shortly by Villebrum’s first goal of the season at 1:35. Ava Mount rounded out a dominant opening period with a powerplay marker at the 0:05 mark, giving the Steelhawks full control heading into intermission.
Superior Heights stayed relentless in the second. At 14:43, Alana Johnstone found the back of the net unassisted, before Villebrum notched her second of the game at 10:48 with help from Zara Zavoral. Hodkinson extended the lead at 2:49 on a setup from Villebrum, and Rumiel added her second of the contest just fourteen seconds later. Curran closed the period with her second of the game at the 00:35 mark, capping another dominant frame for the Steelhawks.
The third period brought more milestone moments as Superior Heights continued their offensive outburst. Prophet netted her second of the afternoon at 10:07, and Rumiel completed her hat trick at 7:13 with another unassisted tally. Villebrum followed suit just minutes later, scoring her third of the game at 4:02 on a feed from Zavoral. Grace Curran added one more unassisted goal at 3:03 to close out the scoring.
On the defensive side, the Steelhawks received flawless goaltending as Kaydence Wardell earned the shutout. For the Knights, Natalia McDonald and Alex Lepore shared the goaltending duties in a challenging season-opening matchup.

St Mary’s will return to action on December 1st when they take on the CASS Huskies at the Rankin Arena. The Steelhawks will also meet the Huskies in their next outing on December 8th, with both games set for a 2:30 p.m. puck drop.
Superior Heights’ impressive start—powered by the hat tricks from Rumiel and Villebrum—sends an early statement that the Steelhawks will once again be a force in the 2025 girls high school hockey season.
