Four boxers from the Steel City MMA boxing team returned from Sudbury on Saturday, September 20th, with two wins and two losses.
Andrew Cormier, who was making his competition debut, dropped his bout to Jordan Prevost of Gold City Boxing in Timmins. Originally scheduled to face another opponent, a late notice change had Cormier facing off against the more experienced Prevost, who outweighed Cormier by 30 lbs.
Brent Murry lost a razor close decision to Leonardo Villamar of Tony Walker Boxing in Toronto, Ontario. A competitive bout throughout had the judges award the decision to Villamar, moving Murray’s record to 2-1 on the year.
Rene Chavez got the Steel City Boxing crew on the winning side of things with a three-round decision over Silas Folley of Pinnacle Boxing, in Belleville, Ontario. After a close first round Chavez started to distance himself from Folley in rounds two and three with strong defensive work and counters. The win improves Chavez’ record on the year to 3-1.
The final Steel City fighter of the evening would be Mohammad Belal Ahmadi, who fought in the co-main event against home-town favourite Ethan Toulouse of Sudbury’s Top Glove boxing academy. Ahmadi would end things early in the first round after knocking Toulouse down with a strong right hand. After a standing 8 count, the referee decided that Toulouse was not fit to continue, awarding Ahmadi the victory via TKO.
Head coach of Steel City MMA, Brent Fryia, was happy with the performance of his boxers.
“We’re a young team, and with the exception of Rene (Chavez), all of our guys are novices. Wins and losses don’t always tell the whole story at this level. Every one of these guys fought very well, even in defeat.” says Fryia.
He continues “Our boxers have been busy this year, competing four times, with another event in early November. We’re looking forward to growing the competitive team here even more”.
