On Sunday, November 14th, the first Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League game took place at the Memorial Gardens since March 2020 with the Korah Colts facing the St Mary’s Knights in front of over 200 high school hockey fans.
With 2:44 remaining in the opening period with a cross ice from Nick Kelly, Kyle Scarfone finds the back of Korah goaltender Matthew Gagne’s net over the blocker to give the Knights a 1 – 0 lead. 3:27 into the second period, Carter Lidstone fires St Mary’s second goal of the game through traffic to find the back of the net through Gagne’s five hole. Christian Omollo skates coast to coast down the left side of the ice to cut across Korah’s crease to lift an unassisted Knights goal over a sprawling Gagne to bring the lead to 3 – 0 only 30 seconds into the final period. With a four on four goal, Daniel Bumbaco fires a wrsit shot from the right faceoff circle to find the back of the Colts net over Gagne’s right shoulder to give St Mary’s their first win of the 2021 – 2022 high school hockey season. Joel Belec earned the shutout in the Knights 4 – 0 win over the Colts.
St Mary’s coach Frank Medaglia told Saultsports that “I think that the boys played pretty hard. It took a while to get into a rhythm since the first period was full of penalties for us. Moving forward, we need to be much more disciplined and do what it takes to stay out of the box. We are happy with the outcome, but we feel that we certainly have room for improvement when it comes to execution. Our strength is going to come from team speed and moving the puck quickly to teammates in a better position. We had a few defensive breakdowns and Belec had our back and earned his shutout. I thought that we played pretty solid in the third period on fresh ice and that we finished the game much better than we started.”
