Huskies Power Past Knights in High-Scoring Girls High School Win to Open December

At the Rankin Arena on December 1st, the CASS Huskies and St. Mary’s Knights returned to Sault Ste. Marie High School Girls Hockey action looking to shake off season-opening losses. In a matchup between two determined teams sitting at 0–1, it was the Huskies who surged ahead early and never looked back, skating to a decisive win to move into the win column.

The opening period saw an explosion of offense, with the Huskies setting the tone right from the start. At 14:42, Kendall Kleist opened the scoring off a feed from Kenneth Shaw. Just minutes later, Shaw doubled the lead at 4:26, converting a pass from Bridgette Guy. The Huskies made it 3–0 when Riley Reed pounced on a loose puck and scored unassisted at 3:30.

St. Mary’s pushed back late in the frame. Saija Maione put the Knights on the board at 1:25 after finishing a setup from Riley Archambault and Myla Meakin. The Knights struck again just 41 seconds later when Ashlyn Kobzick buried a rebound, assisted by Calleigh Belkosky and Ellie Gour, trimming the Huskies’ lead to 3–2 after a wild first period.

CASS wasted no time restoring control in the second. At 13:32, Charlotte Nicholson scored unassisted to extend the lead, followed by another unassisted strike from Dani Stewart at 10:49. Nicholson added her second of the game at 5:53, once again doing the work herself to push the Huskies ahead 6–2.

The Huskies continued their offensive momentum in the third period. Kleist netted her second of the game at 14:37, followed by Stewart adding another at 10:30 off a setup from Guy and Shaw. Reed then added her second of the contest at 8:35, assisted by Nicholson and Olivia Alton. Stewart completed her standout performance at 2:41 with her third goal of the day, assisted by Reed and Kleist.

St. Mary’s battled to the final minutes, and Maione added her second of the game at 1:05, assisted by Dana Fitzsimmons and Meakin, but the Huskies’ early surge and sustained scoring proved too much to overcome.

Between the pipes, Knights goaltender Natalia McDonald faced a steady barrage of shots, while Huskies netminder Claire Henshell held strong to secure the win for CASS.

Next up, the Knights will look to regroup when they face the Korah Colts on December 3rd at 2:30 p.m. at the Rankin Arena. The Huskies return to action on December 8th, also at 2:30 p.m., when they meet the Superior Heights Steelhawks.

CASS’ explosive offensive showing could be a sign of things to come as the Huskies settle into the season with growing confidence.
