Over the October 9th to 13th weekend, the Soo U16 AAA Greyhounds hit the road to London, Ontario, joining forty other U16 AAA programs from across the province and midwestern United States for the annual Wendy Dutton Memorial Tournament.
Game one on October 9th at 8:45 p.m, the Greyhounds opened the tournament with a close matchup against the Toronto Titans. The only goal of the game came at 11:19 of the first period when Kane Grayson scored for the Titans, assisted by Jacob Bebawy and Matteo Lioulios.
Goaltender Phoenix Bell was solid in net for the Soo, while Toronto’s Will Peterson and James Barber shared goaltending duties in the shutout win.
Game two for the Greyhounds was on October 10th at 1:15 p.m against the Indiana Elite. The Greyhounds found the scoresheet in their second contest but ultimately fell short against Indiana Elite.
In the first period, Reegan Dezordo opened the scoring for the Soo with help from Matthew Circelli and Rocco Dos Reis. Circelli added another Greyhounds goal late in the second, assisted by Nolan Lesperance.
Indiana responded with goals from Hollister Wallace, Carter Schoegler, and Drew Anaba, including two power-play tallies and an empty-net goal in the final seconds.
Ethan Brewer started in net for the Greyhounds, while Zane Spuzzillo picked up the win for Indiana Elite.
For game three of the weekend took place on October 10th with a 8:10 p.m puck drop with their opponents London Jr. Knights, the Greyhounds ran into a strong London Jr. Knights squad.
Ryan Salmoni opened the scoring early, and Drew Bate added two goals—one shorthanded—to pace the Knights’ offense. Lucas Enwright also found the back of the net, with assists coming from Jake Readings, Silas Strachan, and Jace Luchanko.
Phoenix Bell was back between the pipes for the Soo, while Valentino Gonzalez earned the shutout for London.
In their final game of the weekend was on October 11th at 9:45 a.m with the Greyhounds closing out their weekend with a hard-fought win over the North Shore Whitecaps.
After Taymon Browne put the Whitecaps ahead early, the Soo responded with power-play goals from Logan Watson and Preston Gioia, assisted by David Francella, Ethan Farquharson, and Rocco Dos Reis.
In the third, Perry Car tied the game for North Shore, but with just under four minutes remaining, Rocco Dos Reis buried the game-winner with help from Ethan Cress and Matthew Circelli.
Ethan Brewer earned the win in net for the Greyhounds, while Ryerson Swan handled the goaltending duties for North Shore.
