On Friday, November 14th, the eighth place (8-13-1-1) Soo Eagles opened their northern road swing with a visit to Kirkland Lake, where they faced the tenth place (5-13-2-1) Gold Miners in NOJHL action. Despite a strong start and holding the lead through 40 minutes, the Eagles saw the game slip away in the third period as the Gold Miners surged late to earn a 4–2 victory on home ice.
After a scoreless first period, the Eagles broke the deadlock at 7:56 of the second when Coulson Bell buried his fifth of the season, finishing off a setup from Nolan Nemecek and Colton Huckson. The tally stood as the lone marker through two periods as the Eagles carried a 1–0 lead into the final frame.
Kirkland Lake responded in the third with a determined push. Ben Lyons evened the score at 9:13 on the powerplay, assisted by Fynn Manttari and Owen O’Grady. The Gold Miners then took their first lead at 13:25 when Mavrick Boucher netted his third of the season off a feed from Vaive Hickey. With the Eagles pressing late, Ryland Harvey added an empty-net goal at 18:32 to extend the Kirkland Lake advantage to 3–1.
The Eagles answered back quickly, cutting the deficit to one just 12 seconds later. Logan Stawizynski notched his ninth of the season at 18:44, with Micah Seery and Coulson Bell drawing assists. But any chance of a comeback faded when Tysen Andersen sealed the win for the Gold Miners with a second empty-netter at 19:44.
In goal, Soo netminder Dalton Hoornstra turned aside 21 of 23 shots, while Kirkland Lake’s Glen McInnes matched the performance with 21 saves of his own.
After the 4–2 loss, the Eagles head south to Powassan, where they will take on the Voodoos on Saturday, November 15th for a 7:00 p.m. start.
