The Hearst Lumberjacks broke open a scoreless game with a pair of second period tallies and never trailed as part of a 4-1 win over the Soo Eagles Friday, September 25th in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at Pullar Stadium.
A stellar point-blank save by Hearst starter Owen Bonthuis on Anden Marceau highlighted the best-scoring chance in a scoreless first 20 minutes of the match-up.
Action in the middle frame saw the Lumberjacks break the deadlock at 12:03 of the session when Mathieu Comeau quickly swatted in a crisp cross-ice pass from Chase Thompson that left Sault Ste. Marie netminder Jace Knoerle with little chance.
Tacking on another a couple of shifts later, Sam Taylor put the visitors up by two when Henry Ouellet found him free in the left circle where he took the feed and ripped it past the glove of Knoerle.
Staying 2-0 for the visitors into the back half of the third, the Eagles, skating in their home opener, finally solved Bonthuis with 7:25 remaining in regulation as Ethan Hoff stuffed in a shot put to the net from the point by Colton Huskson.
The Soo then got Knoerle out late for another skater, but Ty McKay and Ouellet helped secure the road victory for Hearst with a pair of empty net efforts in the final stages of the contest.
