Cougars Make History with First-Ever Win, Sweep Mountaineers in OCAA Action in Hamilton

The Sault College Cougars women’s volleyball team took a major step forward in their inaugural season, making program history with their first-ever win after a weekend OCAA series against the Mohawk Mountaineers on January 24th and 25th at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre on the campus of Mohawk College.

The Cougars entered the weekend determined to secure their first victory of the season and showed early promise in the opening match on Saturday, January 24th. Sault College battled through a tightly contested first set, edging the Mountaineers 29–27 to take an early lead. Mohawk responded with strong play in the middle sets, claiming the second set 25–17 and narrowly winning the third set 27–25. Despite a strong push from the Cougars in the fourth, the Mountaineers closed out the match with a 25–23 win to take the contest in four sets.

Undeterred by the setback, Sault College returned to the court on Sunday with confidence and composure. In game two of the weekend, the Cougars delivered a historic performance, sweeping the Mountaineers 3–0 to earn the first win in program history. Sault College controlled the match from start to finish, taking the sets 25–22, 25–16, and 25–22, showcasing improved consistency, teamwork, and execution across all areas of the game.

The milestone victory marked a significant moment for the Cougars as they continue to build their women’s volleyball program in its inaugural season, providing a strong foundation for future growth and success.

Sault College will now return home to close out their season in front of their supporters, hosting the Sheridan Bruins on January 31st and February 1st at the Sault College campus in Sault Ste. Marie.
