The Sault College Cougars continued their unbeaten run in impressive fashion on Saturday night, September 19, cruising to a 52–10 victory over the London Beefeaters under the lights in London, Ontario.
The Cougars entered the matchup with a perfect 5–0 record after defeating the Ottawa Sooners 43–21 in Sault Ste. Marie on September 12. London came into the contest at 3–2 following a 26–19 loss to the St. Clair Saints one week earlier.
Sault College wasted little time establishing control of the game.
At 6:53 of the opening quarter, rookie quarterback Emerson Peterkin connected with veteran Sam Mustaspha, who broke loose for a 59-yard touchdown play. Nik Vecchio added the convert to give the Cougars an early 7–0 advantage.
Just over three minutes later, at 3:43, rookie Jayden Ralph broke through the London defence, evading three Beefeaters defenders on his way to a 35-yard touchdown run. Vecchio’s successful conversion extended the Sault College lead to 14–0.
The Cougars’ defence then produced the next major play.
At 8:48 of the second quarter, rookie Russell Beaubrun intercepted a London pass at the Beefeaters’ 35-yard line and returned it all the way for a touchdown. Vecchio once again converted, putting Sault College ahead 21–0.
London conceded a safety at the 4:20 mark, adding another two points to the Cougars’ total and making it 23–0.
Vecchio continued to contribute on special teams, connecting on a 28-yard field goal to increase the Sault College advantage to 26–0.
The Beefeaters finally got on the scoreboard when Brayden Rivard connected on a 42-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 26–3.
The Cougars, however, had one more scoring play before halftime.
With just seven seconds remaining in the second quarter, Mustaspha found the end zone for his second touchdown of the night, breaking away on a 37-yard carry. Vecchio added the convert, sending Sault College into the locker room with a commanding 33–3 lead.
Cougars Continue to Pull Away
Sault College continued its offensive attack after halftime.
At 10:26 of the third quarter, Peterkin found Jaiden Trudeau in the end zone on a five-yard touchdown pass. Vecchio converted once again to make it 40–3.
Vecchio added another three points at the 3:07 mark, connecting on a 28-yard field goal as the Cougars extended their lead to 43–3.
London answered late in the third quarter. With just 27 seconds remaining, Beefeaters quarterback Nicholas Fonti connected with Jason Leonard on a five-yard touchdown pass. Rivard added the convert, bringing the score to 43–10.
The Cougars quickly responded in the fourth.
Just 99 seconds into the final quarter, Peterkin connected with veteran Jack McPherson on a 16-yard pass. McPherson continued the play for another 15 yards and found the end zone for another Sault College major. Vecchio’s convert pushed the Cougars’ lead to 50–10.
With 10:29 remaining in the game, London conceded two points rather than attempting to get the punt out of its own end zone, giving Sault College the final 52–10 victory.
The win moves the Cougars to a perfect 6–0 on the season, while the Beefeaters fall to 3–3.
Sault College’s offence and defence both played major roles in the victory, with Peterkin accounting for multiple touchdowns, Mustaspha scoring twice, and Beaubrun providing a defensive touchdown on his interception return. Vecchio was also a major contributor throughout the night with multiple converts and field goals.
Beefeaters Head to Sault Ste. Marie
The two teams will not have to wait long for a rematch.
The London Beefeaters will travel north to Sault Ste. Marie for their next meeting with the Cougars on Saturday, September 25, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Superior Heights Field.
After dominating the first meeting 52–10, the Cougars will look to continue their perfect season when the Beefeaters come to town.
