The Algoma Thunderbirds women’s basketball team is excited to announce the commitment of Abigail Couture from Timmins, Ontario. Abby is a 5’11 post player who attended O’Gorman High School.
Abigail will be enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts Law & Justice Program.
Abby has been successful at both the high school and club level. She won AA OFSSA Gold in both the 2017/18 & 2018/19 seasons, won A OFSSA bronze 2019/20 and was a D1 Silver medalist with her Timmins’ Select U16 team in 2016/17.
“Abby is dedicated and coachable. She has always been driven to improve her skill set as a big on the court. We are proud of her accomplishments and look forward to seeing her continue to improve and thrive as she follows her dreams in the Thunderbirds program,” said coach Marcy McCarty.
Abby likes to spend her time playing basketball in the gym and volunteering her time being an assistant coach for her younger sister’s basketball team.
“Abby comes from a strong high school and club program. She will come in with a good understanding of how to play the game and her size and ability to shoot the ball will be an asset. Excited to get a northern kid with the success she has had thus far,” added, coach Vetrie
Abigail had this to say about her decision to join the Thunderbirds.
“After much deliberation I have chosen to attend Algoma University for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, my research has shown that Algoma not only offers a quality program that will best prepare me for my chosen vocation but also boasts small class sizes. This is something that I not only look forward to but feel is extremely important to help guarantee the success of any student. In addition, being from a smaller community I feel that I would be more comfortable continuing my education in a similar setting. Sault Ste Marie offers me such an option. It is my intention to play basketball for the women’s varsity team. Another factor in helping me choose Algoma is the opportunity to play for coach Vetrie. He is genuinely committed to helping his student athletes succeed both on and off the court. It is this kind of support that will make my transition to post-secondary education a smooth and positive experience. Although not exclusive, these are a few of the reasons I am excited to begin my post-secondary education and further my athletic career at Algoma University.”
