At the John Rhodes Centre on Thursday, November 27th, the fifth-place (2-7) CASS Huskies made their way into Sault Ste Marie to take on the second-place (4-3-1) St Mary’s Knights in Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League action.
The opening period delivered a fast pace with plenty of scoring. St Mary’s struck first at 12:45 when Nathan Watts notched his ninth of the season unassisted, followed by Bates Borelli’s first of the year at 10:30 with help from Owen Brown. The Huskies answered back as Jack McGonegal scored his third of the season at 5:24, assisted by Noah Smith and Carson McCracken. CASS carried that momentum into a late-period power play, where Austin Finlayson buried his sixth of the season unassisted to tie the game 2–2 after one.
The second period saw the scoring open up even more. CASS grabbed their first lead of the night at 13:46 when Max Moyal scored his first of the season unassisted. St Mary’s responded quickly and decisively with four straight goals. Beau Primeau tied the game at 12:26 with his fifth of the campaign, assisted by Hunter Jackson and Nathan Watts. Watts continued his strong night with his tenth of the year at 8:03, assisted by Ethan Agawa and Luke Cady. Agawa then added his third of the season at 4:02 with Primeau drawing the assist. Borelli scored his second of the game unassisted at 2:40 to extend the Knights’ lead, but CASS stopped the run when Teagun Beaulieu scored his first of the season at 2:11, assisted by Carter Pritchard, sending the teams to the dressing rooms with St Mary’s ahead 7–4.
In the third, CASS pushed back early on a power play as Carter Pritchard scored his second of the season at 5:12 to pull the Huskies within two. However, the Knights sealed the game with two late power-play goals. Watts completed his hat trick—his 11th of the season—at 2:14 with Hunter Jackson assisting. Then, with just 49 seconds remaining, Russell McNally added his second of the season, assisted by Agawa, securing a 8–5 victory for St Mary’s.
Between the pipes, Riley Papi-Grant earned the win for the Knights, while Jack Unetic tended goal for the Huskies.
Both teams return to action on Sunday, November 30th at the John Rhodes Centre. The Huskies will face the Korah Colts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Knights taking on the Colts at 7:00 p.m. Both matchups will be broadcast live on Saultsports TV.
