Wolves Take a Bite Out of Thunderbirds in GNML Back to Back Losses

The Soo Minor Midget Thunderbirds hosted the Sudbury Nickel Capital Minor Midget Wolves on September 23rd and 24th in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario at the John Rhodes Centre in Great North Midget League hockey action.

In game one on Saturday evening, Justin Mauro opened the scoring for the Thunderbirds 4:10 into the game with an unassisted Soo goal to give the hosts a 1 – 0 lead. At 12:23 of the period, Gavin Brown fired the tying goal behind Thunderbird netminder Tyler Greco with a pass from Hunter Brazier of the Wolves. Sudbury’s Nicholas Faught sends a pass to Mathieu Gaudreau at 11:08 of the first to give the visitors a 2 – 1 lead. With 4:02 left in the period, Chase Lammi sends Sudbury into the first intermission up 3 – 1. Gavin Brown and Brazier had the helpers on Lammi’s goal. 1:14 into the final period, Hunter Rheaume pulls Thunderbirds within one on the Soo’s second goal with Brock Santa Maria and Nathan Headrick drawing the assists.

With the Wolves shorthanded, Nathaniel Lalonde increases Sudbury’s lead to 4 – 2 at 13:40 of the period with an unassisted goal behind Greco. On a Thunderbird power play, Michael Chaffey sinks the Soo’s third of the contest behind Sudbury goaltender Owen Kilganon to close the gap to one at 5:22 of the third. Michael Neveau and Santa Maria notched the contributors on Chaffey’s power play goal. Giordano Biondi cements the Wolves lead scoring Sudbury’s fifth with only 1:57 left in the game to give the visitors a 5 – 3 win. Spenser Dickson and Dario Beljo added the helpers on Biondi’s goal.

In Sunday afternoon’s matinee, Biondi sinks the first of the game at 11:07 of the opening period with Dickson setting Biondi’s goal to give the Wolves a 1 – 0 lead. Sudbury jumps out to a 2 – 0 lead with 2:33 left in the period on a Lammi goal to send the Wolves into the first intermission leading. Andrew Favot and Brazier added the assists on Lammi’s goal. Sinking the Soo’s first on the game Sunday afternoon was Thunderbird Mauro at 11:17 of the second. Cooper Smyl and Mateo Perri had the contributors on Mauro’s goal. Finding the back of the Wolves Carson Boutin’s net, Hunter Rheaume evens the game 2 – 2 at the 6:28 mark of the period. Mauro and Issac Parise registered the assists on the Soo’s second of the game.

Michael Neveau gave the Thunderbirds their first lead of the weekend with 1:25 left in the middle stanza on a power play goal. Mauro and Perri set up Neveau’s tying marker. 46 seconds into the third, Favot and Avery Chisholm added the helpers on Sudbury’s Dario Beljo’s tying goal behind Thunderbird goaltender Noah Zeppa. Chaffey sinks the go – ahead for the Soo 8:52 into the final period with Smyl and Neveau contributing. 25 seconds the halfway mark of the period, Faught scores the Wolves tying goal to send the game into overtime. Beljo and Biondi notched the assists on Faught’s goal. Finding the back of the Thunderbird net 2:37 into overtime, Faught scores the game winner for the Wolves. Brazier and Lammi drew the helpers on Faught’s overtime winner.

The Soo will be back in action on September 29th when the Thunderbirds hosted the Sudbury Nickel Capital Minor Midget Wolves in a 6:00 p.m puck drop at the Rankin Arena.
