Algoma University and the Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program are pleased to announce that Tanner Wilden has joined the men’s and Makenna Wiebe have joined soccer programs for the 2017-18 season.
“Tanner is a key signing for the program,” said men’s Head Coach Neil Ovey. “Defense was an area we were looking to strengthen so we are happy that he has joined. Tanner has a lot of experience playing centre back. He has a great soccer background playing in Germany. He is comfortable with the ball, good in the tackle, and has good vision. Again this is an example of how far reaching our program is recruiting.”
Tanner Wilden was born in Fort Myers, Florida. Standing at 6’0″ and 171 pounds, Wilden has been living in Germany for the last 18 years, playing competitive soccer abroad for 12 of those years. He is dominant in the centre back position. In 2017, Wilden was named Fupa U19 Top 11 Player of the Week in 9 games. He has played over 5,100 minutes since 2015. In 2013, his squad were Trofedo Mediteraneo Cup (Spain) Champions. He had the highest German youth qualification in 2012. Wilden has participated in various German and American soccer development programs.
Outside of soccer, Wilden is also a gold medalist in various track and field events.
He also helps run various soccer camp programs in Germany.
Wilden is receiving an athletics scholarship to help fund his studies.
He will be studying in Algoma U’s three-year Bachelor of Business Administration program.
“I have chosen Algoma U because of the small class sizes – this benefits me personally since students can be individually supported. Furthermore, my continuous communication with Coach Neil Ovey and Admission Advisor Jamal Muckett-Sobers was very helpful with my questions and made me feel comfortable. This and the welcoming atmosphere led to my decision to join,” said Wilden.
“Makenna is a recruit from the Saskatchewan Development Program. She is a versatile player and can play midfield or in the defense. She has a great understanding for the game and will be a great assist to the program. Her commitment demonstrates that the program is growing and reaching out of Ontario and bringing in quality student-athletes. The soccer program is becoming the recruitment tool we knew it would be,” said women’s Head Coach Neil Ovey.
Makenna Wiebe is a 5’3″, 130-pound full back, wing back, and attacker from Martensville, Saskatchewan. Currently, Wiebe is on the preliminary roster for Team Saskatchewan for the Canada Games. Since 2014, Wiebe has been a member of the Saskatchewan High-Performance Female Development Program. She has also been a member of the ASTRA Centre for Excellence Club, Hollandia Soccer Club, and VSA Rovers Soccer Club. She is a two-time provincial champion, and also a provincial silver medalist.
Outside of soccer, Wiebe is a provincial diving bronze medalist and a five-time all-around gymnast champion.
Wiebe is currently attending Bishop James Mahoney High School and is an Honour Roll student.
Wiebe is receiving an athletics scholarship to help fund her studies.
She will be studying in Algoma U’s four-year Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology program.
“I chose Algoma U because of the small community it creates within Sault Ste. Marie and it allows me to participate in high-level soccer while also getting my education,” said Makenna.
