Tyrel O’Brian Joins Algoma U Thunderbirds Men’s Basketball Program

Algoma University and the Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program are pleased to announce that Tyrel O’Brian has joined the men’s basketball program for the 2017-18 season.

“Tyrel is going to be a good fit for us and we are extremely excited about him joining the program. Tyrel will be a big help on the glass,” said men’s Head Coach Thomas Cory.

From Toronto, Ontario, O’Brian is a 6’4″ shooting guard and has been playing ball for eight years. Weighing in a 210 pounds, O’Brian was an OFSAA Silver medalist in 2016 with his high school. In 2014, his high school were OFSAA Champions. He was also a member of the 2014 Team Ontario.

O’Brian also volunteers with the Toronto Triple Threat Basketball Squirts program.

O’Brian will be studying in Algoma U’s four-year Bachelor of Business Administration program. He is receiving a scholarship to help offset the cost of tuition.

“I chose Algoma because it checked off a lot of the requirements for the type of university I wanted to go to. After my coach suggested it to me, I researched more and decided that this would be the best fit for me. I like the fact that it is a smaller university and would have a more community feel to it,” said O’Brian.
