On May 27th in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, the varsity Sault Sabercats opened their season in the Ontario Football Conference against the Peterborough Wolverines in a 4:00 p.m kick – off at Superior Heights.
With numerous penalties for the Sault, the Sabercats opened their 2017 season with a 35 – 13 loss to the Wolverines. Sabercats Robert Wright and Jared Strachan had the touchdowns for the Sault with Wright receiving and running ball into the Wolverines end zone while defensive lineman Strachan blocked a Peterborough punt and recovered the ball in the Wolverine end zone for the other touchdown. 18 year old quarterback Michael Byron finished the game with three inceptions, one touchdown pass along with 19 completions on 42 attempts in the Sabercats 35 – 13 loss on Saturday afternoon.
On the offence, Byron rushed the most for the Sault with 36 yards with eight carries. Veterans Dalton Toppan and Ryan Yost combined for a total of 78 on four receptions each with Toppan with 41 yards and Yost with 37. Wright caught for 64 yards for the Sabercats while Yost carried the ball on six opportunities along with Tristian Marshall finishing the game with 28 yards on 12 carries. Jacob Fecteau led the defense with six assisted and two solo tackles with Darian Belkosky totaling two solos, one sack, one fumble recovery and four assisted tackles for the Sabercats. Nick Dipasquale and Joe Trudeau each had an interception for the Sault. Geryd Lesage completed three solo and two assisted tackles while Devin Sequin added one solo tackle, four assists and two sacks.
The Sabercats will now meet the Huronia Stallions on June 3rd at Superior Heights in a 4:00 p.m kick – off.
