On January 6th in Powassan, Ontario in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action, the first place west division (24-8-2-1) Soo Thunderbirds took to the ice to face the first place east division (28-3-1-2) Powassan Voodoos in a regular season match – up. The Thunderbirds were coming off a postponement in Kirkland Lake 24 hours earlier due to CO2 levels.
Thunderbird rookie forward Camaryn Baber fired an unassisted goal at 6:34 of the opening period to give the Soo a 1 – 0 lead on his eighth of the 2017 – 2018 season. Tristan Cicchello scored the visitors second unassisted goal with his fourth of the season 4:28 into the final period to bring the Thunderbirds lead to 2 – 0. At 9:31 of the period, Brandon MacKinnon found the back of Soo goaltender Brandon Gordon’s net to pull the Voodoos within one, Tomas Yachmenev and Shane Beaulieu drew the contributors on Powassan’s lone goal of the game. 29 seconds before the halfway mark of the third, veteran forward Nick Smith finds Baber at the 9:31 mark of the period to give the Soo a 3 – 1 win over the Voodoos. Thunderbird goaltender Brandon Gordon turned away 37 of 38 shots in the Soo’s 25th win of the season.
Veteran forward Nick Smith told Saultsports that “I thought it was a great game by all the guys everyone played their role and we got the two points. To get the win tommorow against the Rapids, we have to keep playing the way we are playing and wins will keep coming.”
