In the lone game of the evening in a midweek match – up in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario on September 27th, the Soo Thunderbirds hosted the Espanola Express in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action. The Thunderbirds are coming off a 3 – 1 win over the Express back on September 17th in Espanola.
Espanola’s Cole Csorbay fires the first goal at 4:17 of the opening period behind Thunderbird goaltender Eric Schuch to give the Express a 1 – 0 lead with a pass from Tyler Bourassa. Sinking his goal in the NOJHL, Tanner Mayne evens the game 1 – 1 at the 7:32 mark of the period with Alex Acosta and Braden Robbins adding the contributors on Mayne’s goal. 11 seconds past the halfway mark of the first, Nolan Ford finds the back of Espanola’s net with Steven Bellini and Robbins drawing the helpers on Ford’s second of the 2017 – 2018 season.
Scoring his first of the season, Thunderbird captain Ryan Mulligan adds to the Soo’s lead at 11:07 of the third to give the hosts a 3 – 1 lead on an unassisted goal. Thunderbird goaltender Eric Schuch turns away 18 of 19 shots in the Soo’s win on home ice on Wednesday evening at the John Rhodes Centre.
“I thought all the boys really battled hard and played within the system coach has set out for us. We created a lot of good opportunities and chances. We got away from the system a little bit in the third and we’re on our heels but got back to playing our game and finished the game strong” said Thunderbird captain Ryan Mulligan.

The Thunderbirds will host their cross border rivals, the Soo Eagles on September 30th at the John Rhodes Centre in a 7:30 p.m start.
