At the John Rhodes Centre in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario on January 11th, the west division first place Soo Thunderbirds hosted the fifth place east division Timmins Rock in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match – up.
Thunderbird captain Noah Solinger fires his ninth of the season 10:16 into the opening period to give the Soo a 1 – 0 lead with Camaryn Baber and Robert Calisti adding the helpers on Solinger’s power play marker. Forward Lucas Theraiult finds the back of the Rock’s net at 4:11 of the middle stanza for Theriault’s seventh of the season to give the Soo a 2 – 0 lead. Brendan Miller and Solinger had the assists on Theriault’s goal. Sinking his 27th of the season, Thunderbird veteran forward Nick Smith brings the lead to 3 – 0 with Austin Heinrich setting up the Soo’s third of the contest. Adding to the lead, Tristan Cicchello scores his fourth on the season to increase the lead to 4 – 0 with Braden Robbins and Bradon Caruso registering the helpers on Cicchello’s power play goal at 19:21 to send the Soo into the second intermission up 4 – 0. With the Soo shorthanded, Smith gives the Thunderbirds a 5 – 0 win at 5:53 of the third with Baber and Heinrich adding the contributors on Smith’s second of the game. Thunderbird goaltenders Eric Schuch and Brandon Gordon shared the duties in the Soo’s win. Schuch turned away 13 of 13 in 35:53 while Gordon stopped 9 of 9 in 24:07 in the Soo’s shutout win.
The Thunderbirds next match – up will be against their cross border rivals in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan at the Pullar Stadium on January 19th when they meet the Soo Eagles in a 7:30 p.m puck drop.
