The fifth place Soo Thunderbirds headed to Elliot Lake on November 12th to meet the fifth place Wildcats in west division Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League regular season action. The Thunderbirds were coming of a 2 – 1 win over their cross border rivals, the Soo Eagles in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan on November 10th.
39 seconds into the game, Wildcat Jacob Kelly finds the back of Thunderbird goaltender Eric Schuch’s net to give the hosts a 1 – 0 lead. Dawson Garcia and Mark Perone added the helpers on Kelly’s power play goal. David Elford scores on a Elliot Lake penalty shots 3:19 into the second to bring the Wildcats lead to 2 – 0. Ryan Burlington and Addison Tkaczyk set up Wildcat William Bucsis’ goal at the 12:49 mark of the period to add to Elliot Lake’s lead. New arrival, Lucas Theriault fires his first goal of the 2017 – 2018 season to pull the Thunderbirds within two at 15:59 of the second. Tyler Malpass and Brendan Miller drew the contributors on Theriault’s goal.
At 13:55 of the third, Robert Calisti sinks the Soo’s second of the contest to close the gap to one with Steven Bellini and Mark Tassone registering the assists on Calisti’s power play goal. Scoring his 17th of the season, veteran Nick Smith finds the back of the Wildcat net with one second lift in the game with a pass from Miller to send the game into overtime. Ryan Burlington finds the back of Schuch’s net at 4:05 of the second overtime to give Elliot Lake a 4 – 3 win. Goaltender Eric Schuch made 60 saves in the Thunderbirds overtime loss in Elliot Lake.
The third place west division Thunderbirds will host the second place east division Kirkland Lake Gold Miners on November 17th at the John Rhodes Centre with a 7:30 p.m puck drop.
