In their first game at the 2017 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase in Sudbury, Ontario on October 10th, the Soo Thunderbirds hit the ice against the Hearst Lumberjacks in an afternoon matinee. The Thunderbirds fell to the Lumberjacks in the Soo’s season opener on September 2nd in Hearst with a 2 – 0 shutout loss.
At 11:34 of the opening period, Tyler Malpass fires the first goal of the game to give the Soo a 1 – 0 lead with Nolan Ford and Ryan Lawrence adding the assists. Max Griffoen sinks the tying goal 12:34 into the first with Shadow Reuben and Wade Auger drawing the contributors on the Lumberjacks goal. Rookie Camaryn Baber scores the Soo’s go – ahead goal four seconds past the halfway mark of the middle stanza with Tristan Cicchello and Ryan Mulligan notching the helpers on Baber’s goal. On a power play at 12:06 of the second, Baber finds the back of Hearst’s net to bring the Thunderbirds lead to 3 – 1 with a pass from Tyler Malpass. With 2:47 left in the game, Samuel Bourdages sends a pass to Lumberjack Spencer Silver for Hearst second of the contest. Thunderbird goaltender Brandon Gordon turned away 20 of 22 shots in the Soo’s 3 – 2 win over the Lumberjacks.
