In their second game in 24 hours, the second place Soo Thunderbirds hit the ice at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario against the eighth place Soo Eagles after the Thunderbirds taking a 5 – 3 win from the Eagles in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan on March 3rd in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League west division action.
Veteran Mark Tassone sank the first goal of the game for the Thunderbirds at 13:09 of the opening period with a pass from rookie Keegan Stevenson to give the hosts a 1 – 0 lead. Brent Jones finds the back of the Thunderbirds net with 29 seconds left in the period to send the game into the first intermission even at 1 – 1. Roman Gaudet and Nate Harris added to assists on Jones goal. Zach Senecal scores the Thunderbirds go – ahead goal 11:16 into the middle stanza with Sean Emmerson drawing the contributor on Senecal’s power play marker. Gage Stephney gives the west division leaders a 3 – 1 lead at 12:35 of the second with Stevenson and Senecal adding the helpers.
Eagles Roman Gaudet pulls the visitors within one at the 1:48 mark of the third with Harris and Jones notching the assists on Gaudet’s goal. At 7:23, Thunderbird captain Matt Caruso sends a pass to Senecal to give the Thunderbirds a 4 – 2 win over the Eagles. Eagle netminder Kade Phipps turns away 24 of 28 shots while Brandon Gordon stopped 28 of 30 shots in the Thunderbirds win on home ice.
The Thunderbirds will close out their regular season on March 5th when they host the Rayside Balfour Canadians at the Essar Centre in a 2:00 p.m afternoon matinee.
