Thunderbirds Clip the Eagles in NOJHL Action at the Pullar

In a cross border rivalry on March 3rd at the Pullar Stadium in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, the Soo Eagles hosted the Soo Thunderbirds in a west division Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match – up. The Thunderbirds and Eagles headed into Friday evening’s meeting with four win and four losses each in their eight previous meetings during the 2016 – 2017 season.

Nate Harris fires the opening goal for the Eagles 2:06 into the second to give the hosts a 1 – 0 lead with Chris Murphy and William Nichol drawing the contributors. One second before the halfway mark of the period, Brendan Schultz sinks the Eagles second of the game with defenseman Carmen Scarfone and Chris Lutz adding the assists. With his 30th on the season, Zach Senecal finds the back of the Eagles net at 17:24 of the middle stanza to pull the Thunderbirds within one. Matt Caruso and Austin Kozluk drew the helpers on Senecal’s goal. Sean Emmerson and Keegan Stevenson set up Senecal 1:52 into the third to even the game 2 – 2 on a visitor power play. Kaidan McDonald scores his fourth of the season to give the Thunderbirds a 3 – 2 lead at 2:31 of the period with Keenan Eddy and Greg Smith registering the assists.

Roman Gaudet finds the back of Thunderbird goaltender Dougie Newhouse’s net for the Eagles tying goal at 3:59 of the final period with Brent Jones and Bradley Hofelich notching the helpers. With his fourth of the season, Alec Allen gives the west division leaders a 4 – 2 lead at the 13:27 mark of the period with Kozluk and Smith drawing the contributors on Allen’s power play marker. With Eagle netmeinder Jack Deines on the bench for the extra attacker, Matt Caruso breaks down the ice to sink the empty netter to give the Thunderbirds a 5 – 3 win. Ryan Mulligan and Wyatt Villalta had the assists on Caruso’s 28th of the season. Newhouse turned away 34 of 37 while Deines stopped 39 of 43 in Friday evening’s meeting at the Pullar Stadium.

The Thunderbirds will host the Eagles at the Essar Centre on March 4th in a 7:00 p.m puck drop.
