Thunderbirds Add Rugged Blueliner Garett Giertuga to 2017/18 Roster

The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Soo Thunderbirds have acquired defenseman Garett Giertuga from the Superior International Junior Hockey League champions, the Dryden Ice Dogs on July 5th in exchange for defenseman Brendan Jay.

The 19 year old Giertuga comes to Sault Ste Marie after spending time between the NOJHL and SIJHL with the Thunder Bay, Ontario native played 23 regular season with the NOJHL Elliot Lake Wildcats where the 5’9” and 190 lbs blueliner had 28 minutes in penalties before joining the Ice Dogs. In 30 games during the regular season, Giertuga had two goals and two assists along with 29 penalty minutes. In four post – season match – ups with Dryden, the Thunder Bay defenseman added two more points to his 2016 – 2017 total with one goal and one contributor.

As well the Thunderbirds are a power house team that people have come to know as a winning organization, and I am happy to be a part of it. I can offer the Thunderbirds hardwork, grit, toughness, and leadership” said Giertuga.
