With the Canadian Junior Hockey League trade deadline within 12 hours, the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Soo Thunderbirds have made a pair of trades with acquiring defenseman Braden King and forward Spencer Van Tiem on January 10th.
19 year old Sudbury, Massachusetts native King comes to Sault Ste Marie in exchange for a player development fee to join the Thunderbirds after playing 64 regular season games from 2016 – 2018 with the NOJHL Cochrane Crunch. In 23 games in 2017 – 2018, the 6’1” and 185 lbs King had four assists along with tallying a total of 27 minutes in penalties with the Crunch. In 2016 – 2017, Braden had three goals, four assists and 50 penalty minutes in Cochrane.
19 year old Van Tiem started the 2017 – 2018 hockey season with the Odessa Jackalopes of the North American Hockey League. In 17 regular season match – ups, the 6’1” and 170 lbs Birmingham, Michigan forward had four minutes in penalties with the Jackalopes. In 2016 – 2017 with the Ohio Blue Jackets U18 of the T1EHL U18, Van Tiem scored five goals and six helpers in 32 regular season games along with adding three goals and contributing on one more in four post – season match – ups.
