After losing 1 – 0 in the Sault Ste Marie Boys Senior High School Soccer city final to the 2017 Sault Ste Marie city champions, the St. Mary’s Knights, the Superior Heights Steelhawks advanced to AA NOSSA Championship in Sudbury on May 26th. In the 2017 championship game against the St.Joseph/Scollard Hall Bears of North Bay, Ontario, the Steelhawks edged the Bears 2 – 1 for a berth in North Bay at the 2017 OFSSA Championships from June 1st – 3rd.
In game one at 9:00 a.m, Superior Heights met the Dolphins from Iona Catholic Secondary School from Mississauga, Ontario. In their first match – up in North Bay, the Steelhawks were shutout 2 – 0 by the Dolphins. At 1:30 p.m on Thursday afternoon, Superior Heights sank one goal in the 3 – 1 loss to the École secondaire catholique Franco-Cité – Les Faucons from the nation’s capital. In the 3 – 1 loss, Steelhawk Noah Kemper sank the lone goal for Superior Heights. In game three in North Bay on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m, Superior Heights earned their first win at 2017 OFSSA with a 2 – 1 win over the Titans of All Saints Catholic Secondary from Whitby, Ontario. In the 2 – 1 win, Steelhawks Noah Grigg and Gabriel Spina had a goal each for Superior Heights.
In the final game of round robin in North Bay on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m, the Steelhawks earned a 3 – 0 win with a forfeit over the Mustangs of Crestwood Secondary School from Peterborough, Ontario. With a 2 – 2 record, Superior Heights were eliminated from the 2017 OFSSA Senior Boys AA Soccer Championships.
Superior Heights centre back Nick Keenan told Saultsports that “the team came together at the right moment and our composure after the two loses to bring back our record to 2 – 2 in North Bay. Goaltender Garrett Boyonski had unreal week and kept us in all our games to give us a chance.”
All our guys just went out 100%, all the time to end our 2017 season on a high note, said Keenan.
