After having a bye in the first week of the Northern Football Conference (NFC) with the Toronto Raiders taking a one year leave of absence, the Sault Steelers opened up their 2016 NFC season against the Sarnia Imperials on Saturday June 4th at the Rocky DiPietro Field in a 7:30 p.m kick – off.
Unable to complete in pass in the Steelers 17 – 0 loss, quarterback Custer – Jones carried the ball for a total of 30 yards for Sault. With carrying the ball for a total of 45 yards was Steeler Ben Muncaster. Rookie Steve Hiiemaa ran the ball 11 times for 29 yards for the Sault.
After not playing quarterback for ten years, quarterback Kyle Custer – Jones told Saultsports that “tonight’s loss served as a learning experience and will pay off greatly in the long run. We had alot of great things to take away from this, but it is very evident what we need to work on. It felt great to have the opportunity again and if my number is called again, I will gladly step up and do everything I can to help achieve the success that we are capable of.”
“We need to work on timing and execution for success next week. Our defense is stout, our offensive line is phenomenal, we have some superior athletes, its just about getting the machine to run smoothly,” Custer – Jones.
The Steelers second game of the season will be against the Tri City Outlaws on June 11th in Cambridge, Ontario in a 7:00 p.m start at Roger’s Field.
