St. Mary’s Captures 2017 City High School Hockey Championships

On Friday March 3rd at the John Rhodes Centre in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, the Korah Colts and St. Mary’s Knights hit the ice for game four of the 2017 Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League Championship best of five series with the Knights leading the series 2 – 1. The Colts were coming off a 5 – 3 win 24 hours earlier over St. Mary’s.

At 12:06 of the first, Brandon Miller sank the game opener to give the Knights a 1 – 0 lead on an unassisted St. Mary’s goal. Lucas Stefano fired the Knights second of the game with 5:26 left in the period with defensemen Jon Dyer and Justin Morisette adding the contributors. Josh Mannarino brought the lead to 3 – 0 at the 4:18 mark of the first with helpers coming from Nate Medaglia and Michael Cicchelli. The Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League regular season scorer Austin Rowe added to the lead sinking the Knights fourth of the contest 3:25 into the second with Matt Capisciolto and Cicchelli registering the assists.

Darrell Baker brings St. Mary’s lead to 5 – 0 when he finds the back of Korah netminder Joe Caruso’s net at 7:57 of the period. Rowe and Capisciolto drew the helpers on the Knights fifth goal. Mannarino would score his second of the game for the Knights with to increase the lead to 6 – 0 in game four with a pass from Medaglia at 4:46 of the middle stanza. With 3:11 left the second, Capisciolto sunk the Knights goal with Rowe and Baker drawing the helpers. At 5:36 of the third with unassisted goal, Rowe gives the Knights a 7 – 0 shutout win over the Colts to capture the 2017 city championships. Travis Johnson earned the shutout with the win over Korah.

The Korah Colts will represent Sault Ste Marie at the 2017 ‘AA” NOSSA Championships in North Bay on March 6th and 7th while the Knights will head to Sudbury on the 6th and 7th to represent Sault Ste Marie in at the 2017 ‘AAA’ NOSSA Championships.
