Approximately 750 swimmers, representing 78 Swim Ontario clubs descended on the nations capital for the 2015 Ontario Provincial Championships, at the Nepean Sportsplex. Three swimmers from Sault Ste Marie Aquatic Club participated and represented SSMAC at this event over the July 10th – 12th weekend.
Leading the way, sixteen year old Alex Gelmych, setting lifetime personal best swims in all his events including the 100 backstroke, 200 breastroke, 400 individual medley (IM), 100 breastroke and the 400 freestyle. Alex has qualified for 2015 Canadian Age Group Championships later this month in Quebec city at Laval University.
Gelmych was one of four swimmers that attended the Eastern Canadian Championships earlier this year at the same venue in Quebec City. Seventeen year old Erin Lee continued to lower her lifetime best times, lowering her personal best in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breastroke, and 200 IM. Erin will be continuing her swimming and studies at Queens university, following in the footsteps of her older sibling, Steven Lee another SSMAC standout performer competing varsity at an Ontario university.
Older brother, Brian Lee is a former CIS medalist for University of Toronto.
Fifteen year old Andrew Budau, competing in his third provincial championships, challenged well in all his events lowering his personal best time in the 100 breaststroke by over two seconds. Gelmych and Budau return this fall challenging the best swimmers from the regional and provincial programs as veteran swimmers.
