Saultites Speers & Steelhawk Trudel Named H.P Broughton Co-Winners

On Tuesday June 6th at the Marconi Club in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario the 61st Rotary Sports Award Dinner with the H.P Broughton trophy being awarded to Sault Ste Marie’s Top Sportsperson of the Year.

This year saw co – winners awarded the H.P Broughton trophy with Soo Greyhound Blake Speers and Superior Heights Steelhawk Rebekah Trudel taking home Sault Ste Marie’s Top Sportsperson of the Year Award. In 2016 – 2017, Speers finished with 15 goals and 19 assists in 30 regular season OHL games along with playing in the 2017 World Junior Hockey Championship representing Team Canada. The 20 year old Sault Ste Marie, Ontario native was drafted by the NHL New Jersey Devils in the third round and 67th overall in 2015. The 6’0” and 185 lbs forward added one goal and eights assists in eleven post – season games for the Greyhounds.

Trudel who wrestles for Superior Heights as well as represents Sault Ste Marie with the Algoma Wrestling Club. In March 2017, Rebekah brought home gold in the 83 kilogram division in Brampton at the 2017 Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association Championships. At the 2017 Canadian Wrestling Championships in St. Catharines in May 2017, the Algoma Wrestling Club wrestler took a bronze medal in the 82 kilogram division.

Ross Windale Trophy (Secondary School – Most Combined Points) – St. Mary’s

Basketball – Jackson Zack-Coneybeare (Superior Heights)
Nominees: Daniel Martella (St. Mary’s), Isaiah Graber (White Pines) and Jadon Fogg (Korah).

Cross Country – Andrew Budua (Korah)
Nominees: Nick Keenan (Superior Heights), Isaiah Graber (White Pines) and Cole Delarosbil (St. Mary’s).

Curling – Nick Lemieux (St. Mary’s)
Nominees: Jonathan Barrette (Notre-Dame-du-Sault), Aaron Soulliere (White Pines) and Caelan Kingston

Receiving honours for all his work and time with high school sports was Korah prinicipal Sergio Iacoe into the Russ Ramsay High School Sports Hall of Fame.
