The Sault College Cougar women’s and men’s basketball programs opened their final home game of the 2016 – 2017 OCAA season against the Niagara College Knights on February 4th and 5th at the Sault College Health and Wellness Centre in Sault Ste Marie. The women hit the hard court on Saturday with a 2 – 12 record while the Knights came into town with a record of 8 – 5. On the men’s side, the Cougars held a 0 – 12 record with the Knights heading into the weekend 9 – 2.
Taylor Blair (1st Year, Trenton, ON/Child Youth Care) led the Cougars on Saturday evening with 15 (6 rebounds/3 assists) points in Sault College’s 81 – 57 loss to the Knights. Sault Ste Marie, Ontario native Mercedes Ryan (1st Year/Early Child Education) found the basket for 13 (7 recounds/3 assists) points for the Cougars while Jessie Bjornaa (1st Year/Sault Ste Marie, ON/Personal Support Worker) rounded out the top three for Sault College with 11 (6 rebounds/2 assists) points. In the men’s second last home game of the season, Andre Hamilton (1st Year/Toronto,ON/Business) had 23 (5 rebounds) points to lead the Cougars in the Sault College’s 68 – 61 loss to Niagara College. Donte James (4th Year/Scarborough,ON/Business) and MacBeth Madziba (3rd Year/Dundas, ON/Child Youth Worker) combined for 26 points on Saturday at Sault College. James sank 18 (7 rebounds/4 assists) while Madziba added eight (2 rebounds/2 assists) for the Cougars.
With a shortened bench on Sunday afternoon, Cougar Taylor Blair added 27 (10 rebounds/1 assist) points to her weekend total in Sault College’s 82 – 58 loss to the Knights. Second year Mackenize Mazzuca had 14 (2 rebounds/1 assist) points for the Cougars along with Mercedes Ryan sinking 11 (8 rebounds/1 assist) points in the final home game of the 2016 – 2017 season. On Sunday afternoon, Sault College’s MacBeth Madziba hit the hard court for his final game in front of the Cougar crowd. MacBeth Madziba had 19 (1 rebound/2 assists) points in the Cougars 84 – 65 loss. Fata Ceesay (1st Year/Toronto,ON/Business) and Matt Brown (4th Year/Hamilton, ON/Business Management) sank a total of 21 points for Sault College with Ceesay finding the basket for 11 (3 rebounds) as Brown contributed 10 (7 rebounds/1 assist).
The women and men will round out their 2016 – 2017 OCAA season with back to back games against the Sheridan College Bruins on February 11th and 12th. The women will tip – off at 6:00 p.m and 1:00 p.m while the men will follow 8:00 p.m and 3:00 p.m respectively.
