The Sault College Cougars men’s hockey program headed out on the road for their third straight weekend with a three – game tournament in Midland, Michigan for the 2017 Schupan Memorial American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) DIII Tournament that included the Sault College Cougars, Ferris State Bulldogs, Alpena College Lumberjacks, Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals, Northwood University Timberwolves and University of Miami Hurricanes.
In game one of the tournament, the Cougars met the SVSU Cardinals for the second time in four weeks on Thursday evening with Ryan Vendramin and Austin Rowe leading Sault College with four points each. Vendramin sank three goals and added one assist while Rowe scored two goals and registered two helpers in the Cougars 7 – 3 win. Jamie Kamzol had the two other goals for Sault College. Lucas Duckstein added three contributors, Nick Trecroce with two while Mark Khull and Cole Peck had one helper a piece.
On Friday afternoon in Midland, Michigan, the Cougars hit the ice against the Northwood University Timberwolves in game two of the tournament. Tyler Brown and Rowe led Sault College with one goal and four assists in the Cougars 13 – 2 win over the Timberwolves. Vendramin, Khull, Duckstein, Trecroce had four points each with Khull and Trecroce scoring one goal and adding three helpers. First year forward Duckstein sank two and contributed on two more in Sault College’s win. Sinking the other goals for the Cougars were Cody Poirier, Jamie Kamzol, Andrew Trowbridge and Jake Lewis. Trowbridge, Lewis and Kevin Thrower added one helper while defenseman Cole Peck added two more to his weekend total.
With the tournament trophy on the line, the 2 – 0 Cougars faced the 2 – 0 Ferris State Bulldogs Saturday afternoon in game three for Sault College. In a hard fought and physical match – up, captain Tyler Brown opened the scoring to bring the Cougars with two with the Bulldogs up 3 – 1. Rowe had the helper on Brown’s goal. Lewis, Rowe and Vendramin each found the back of net for one for the Cougars in Sault College’s 6 – 4 win over Ferris State. Duckstein had two more for the first year ACHA DIII school. Kelly Quevillon, Brown, Vendramin and Khull had a contributor while Rowe finished the weekend with two more helpers.
The Cougars will take their 2017 Schupan Memorial Championship into Hancock, Michigan on October 26th and 27th to face the Finlandia Lions along with Sault College women facing the Lions on October 26th in an afternoon matinee.
