On June 17th in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, the (2 – 1) varsity Sault Sabercats were looking for their second straight regular season win when they hosted the (2 – 1) Sudbury Gladiators at Superior Heights in a 4:00 p.m kick – off. The Sabercats headed into the final regular season home game coming off a 49 – 2 road win in Vaughan in week three over the Rebels.
At 3:38 of the opening quarter, Nicholas Rideout kicked a 26 yard field goal to give the Gladiators a 3 – 0 lead along with increasing Sudbury’s lead to 6 – 0 Rideout kicked a second field goal for 36 yards through the uprights at 13:21 of the second quarter. 37 seconds before the halfway mark of the second quarter Sabercat quarterback Ryan Yost finds Dalton Toppan in the Gladiator end zone for a 28 yard pass to tie the game 6 – 6. At 3:13, Skylar Premo – Miceli kicked a single point to for the Sault to send the Sabercats into halftime up 7 – 6. 3:08 into the second half, quarterback Yost runs the ball into the Gladiator endzone to increase the lead to 13 – 6. Yost fires a pass for a two point conversion to the Sault’s Robert Wright to bring the lead to 15 – 6.
Sudbury quarterback Rideout runs the ball 14 yards at 11:24 of the final quarter to close the gap to 15 – 12. Rideout’s extra two point was unsuccessful. The Sault’s Yost runs 96 yards for the third touchdown of the game to give the Sabercats a 21 – 12 lead. Toppan catches the extra two for the Sault with 2:25 left in the game. With time ticking down, Sudbury finds Yost in the Sabercat endzone for a safety to bring the score to 23 – 14. Yost finished the game with carrying the ball 17 times for a total of 123 yards while completing 16 passes on 24 attempts on 124 yards.
On offence, Dalton Toppan caught eight Yost passes for 87 yards while Issac Belisto made two catches on 17 yards for the Sault. Nick Fowler had three solo and five assisted tackles while Darian Belkosky had five solo and two assisted tackles while also adding one assisted sack for the Sabercats. Joe Rosso and Andrew Batman combined for three solos and four assisted tackles for the Sault. Adding three solo tackles, one assisted tackle, a solo sack and assisted sack was Devin Sequin along with Nick Roussain and Geryd Lesage had an interception each.
“the team played amazing, the defence played lights out and kept us in the game. As I was being chased down I was just thinking about the win, to win on the road next week we have to have a good week of practice and execute in the game” said Yost.
