Kickboxers from Sault Ste. Marie’s Steel City MMA came away from “Northern Fights” Kickboxing event with two wins and one loss on April 8th. The event, which was held at the Sudbury Steelworkers Hall, featured competitors from ten different clubs in Ontario.
Spencer Pine and Jade Ayotte emerged victorious from their contests, while Marcel Bouchard lost via decision in the event hosted by Muay Thai Ontario, the governing body for kickboxing in Ontario.
Fighting in the 138 lb division, Pine defeated Ricki Collinson of the host team, Sudbury MMA, via unanimous decision in one of the feature bouts of the evening. While controlling the majority of the bout, Pine had his biggest moments of the fight in the third round where he managed to knock Collinson down twice with knees, forcing the referee to call two standing eight counts.
Despite a strong third round, Marcel Bouchard dropped a unanimous decision to Mirza Hopovac of Ottawa Cacademy of Martial Arts in a heavyweight bout.
Jade Ayotte managed to control all three rounds in her bout with Alex Song of Guelph MMA, including a dominant 2nd round where she managed to drop her opponent, forcing a standing eight count.
Next action for Steel City MMA competitors is May 27th as Wreck MMA brings amateur MMA to the Rankin arena in an event co-promoted with Steel City MMA. The event will feature fighters from SCMMA as well as other local martial arts schools.
