On Saturday December 9th, the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Soo Thunderbirds will honour former goaltender Michael Doan and retire Doan’s number 33 prior to the start of the game between the Thunderbirds and their cross border rivals, the Soo Eagles.
Sault Ste Marie, Ontario 25 year old Doan lost his life in July 2017 in Rochester, Minnesota in a single vehicle accident while attending a friends wedding.
During his time in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, the Sault Ste Marie played two seasons with the Soo Thunderbirds in 2009 – 2010 and the Soo Eagles in 2010 – 2011. In 2009 – 2010, Doan played a total of 32 games where he had a goals against average of 4.30 and save percentage of 0.899. After seeing action in 46 games in 2010 – 2011 with the Eagles, Michael was awarded with the NOJHL Best Goals Against Average of 2.66.
Doan had stops from 2012 – 2017 in the NCAA with the Northern Michigan University Wildcats (2012-2015), Usport’s University of Windsor (2015-2016) and the SPHL with the Knoxville Ice Bears and Evansville Thunderbolts (2016 – 2017).
Michael’s family will be at the John Rhodes Centre on December 9th with his parents Mike Sr., Nancy Doan and his sibling’s Eli and Vanessa for his number 33 retirement.
