The future looks bright for the Soo Black Sox organization. London, Ontario played host to their July 22nd – 24th weekend baseball tournament, featuring an array of talented mosquito teams. In game one of the weekend, the Soo laced up against a strong Quinte lineup.
Despite the combined pitching efforts of Connor Bruzas, Camden Cowan, Michael Hapanovich, Gavin Lamming and Logan Andresen, Quinte came away with a decisive 12 – 2 victory. Cowan, Hapanovich, Tyler Greco, Jayce Prgomet, and Michael Basso each chipped in with hits for the local club in the loss.
On Saturday, the Sox swung the momentum in their favour. Offense was the staple of games two and three, with the Sox scoring 18 runs in back-to- back games. The Soo managed to beat a strong London program 18 – 7, with hits coming from Bruzas, Elia Battelli, and Logan Andresen who picked up a home run. Jayce Prgomet, Tyler Greco, and Gavin Lamming combined their efforts on the mound in the win.
The Sox got the bats rolling in game three, beating Dundas 18 – 2. Cowan had three hits, while Bruzas and Prgomet each smashed home runs. Keyton Mousseau also picked up a pair of hits in the win. Bruzas and Lamming split for the win on the mound.
On Sunday, the Soo found themselves in a rematch with Quinte in a winner-take- all Championship match. Despite dropping their first match against Quinte in game one of the tournament, the Sox remained calm and collected as they approached the field.
After falling behind 2 – 1, the Soo began to climb out of the early hole. Pulling ahead 4 – 3 in the fourth inning, the local club’s bats kept rolling in the fifth inning for four more runs. Along with strong catching performances from Tyler Greco and Tyler Pawelek, the Sox were able to hold off Quinte for a 13 – 5 Championship victory.
“The Mosquito Black Sox played extremely well as a unit over the weekend. A balanced attack both offensively and defensively allowed the local club to use their talents to the best of their ability.”
