Playing their last game before the 2017 Ontario Hockey League Christmas break, the first place west division (28-3-2) Soo Greyhounds hit the ice in Guelph, Ontario in an afternoon matinee on December 16th against the second place midwest division (17-11-1-2) Guelph Storm. The Greyhounds are coming off a 4 – 3 win 24 hours earlier in Kitchener over the first place midwest division Rangers.
All alone in front of Storm netminder Anthony Popovich, the Soo’s Ryan Roth fires his eighth of the season into the back of Guelph’s net to give the Greyhounds a 1 – 0 lead 42 seconds into the middle stanza. Noah Carroll and Barrett Hayton set up the Soo’s first of the game. A wrist from the high slot, Barrett Hayton finds the top corner of Popovich’s net to bring the lead to 2 – 0 with his 12th of the season with Noah Carroll drawing the assists on Hayton’s goal 7:26 of the period. Guelph’s Issac Radcliffe finds the back of Greyhound goaltender Matt Villalta at the 9:40 mark of the second to pull the Storm within one. Cam Hillis drew the helper on Radcliffe’s goal. Frost cuts across the front on the Storm’s net to sink the Soo’s third of the game on Morgan’s 18th of the season with Noah Carroll notching his third assist of the game at 14:55 of second to increase the lead to 3 – 1. After his first on the contest, Frost tips defenseman Jacob LeGuerrier’s shot to bring the lead to 4 – 1 with 3:24 remaining in the period. Rasmus Sandin had the other contributor on Frost’s goal.
With a snapshot from the blueline, Noah Carroll scores the Greyhounds fifth goal of the game on his second of the 2017 – 2018 season 55 seconds after Frost’s goal. Hayden Verbeek and Mac Hollowell had the assists on Carroll’s goal at 17:25 of the period to send the Soo into the second intermission up 5 – 1. Finding the back of the net for his fourth of the season, the Soo’s Joe Carroll adds to the lead at 11:03 of the third to give the Greyhounds a 6 – 1 lead. Hayden Fowler and Noah Carroll register the helpers on Carroll’s goal. Barrett Hayton sinks his second of the game at 17:44 of the final period to give the Soo a 7 – 1 win. Frost and Hollowell had the contributors on Hayton’s goal. LGreyhound goaltender Matt Villalata made 25 saves in the Soo’s 20 straight win of the 2017 – 2018 season.
Next up for the Soo Greyhounds will be on December 28th, 29th and 30th with the Soo in Flint, Michigan on the 28th against the Firebirds and in Sault Ste Marie for two at the Essar on December 29th when the Greyhounds play host to the Saginaw Spirit and the Guelph Storm on the 30th.
