On Saturday June 24th at Elliott Soccer Field in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, the Sault Civics Shock U17 Girls hosted the Kitchener Spirit in Western Ontario Youth Soccer League U17 action. The U17 girls were coming 0 – 1 – 1 weekend on June 17th and 18th in the WOYSL season opener in Waterloo with a 2 – 2 tie and 1 lost to the Waterloo United A.
The Shock’s Jenna Nanne, Nicole Pulente, Kara Gruyters, Makenzi Chartrand and Tiffany Davies all sank one each in the Sault’s 7 – 0 shutout win over the Spirit. Taryn Gazankas added two goals in the Shock’s win while Emma Hendrie earned the shutout in the 7 – 0 win at Elliott Field. Former Algoma University Thunderbird soccer goaltender Nick Palazzi also got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend, Chelsea Sabourin at midfield after the Sault’s win over the Spirit.
Shock coach Daniel Scarpino told Saultsports.com that “we did well today. We set out to pressure high up the pitch and then exploit space from an attacking perspective. The girls executed and performed well. Scarpino also told Saultsports.com we will have to be calm in possession in order to pull Kitchener’s defence apart. If we stay sound defensively and possess the ball, we’ll get scoring opportunities. It’s important that we remain focused going into Sunday morning’s match – up at 10:00 a.m.
