Midget Wildcats Prepare for NGML Season Opener with Exhibition Play in St Charles

It has been a long time coming for girls hockey in the North, but now it is a reality with a new league developed this year. Northern Girls Midget Loop consists of the Marconi Cultural Centre Wildcats ‘A’, Kapuskasing Jaguars ‘BB’, Timmins Falcons ‘A’, Sudbury Lady Wolves ‘BB’ and ‘B’, North Bay Ice Boltz ‘A’ and ‘BB’ and Temiskaming Puck Hounds ‘A’.

Over the September 29th – October 1st weekend in St Charles (Sudbury Area), they put together a showcase tournament for those teams that could make it before the league starts, six teams showed up.

Marconi Cultural Centre Wildcats started off against the Timmins Falcon’s at noon Saturday. Both teams skated to a draw in the 1st period with no one scoring. In the second period the Cats exploded for three goals, Madison Vernelli for two and Mispon Martin for the other. The third was a draw again with a goal a piece, Sophie Ramsay got the goal to make it a 4-1 final win.

The Wildcats where back at it at 2:30 against the Sudbury Lady Wolves B team. The first period had the Wildcats scoring the only goal from Martin. In the 2nd period the Lady Wolves tied the score up 1-1. This was a big turning point for the Cats, seeing they allowed only that 1 goal while short handed for over ten minutes 5 on 3. At one point they had five players in the sin bin. The third was a different story, outscoring the Lady Wolves 4 to 1. Vernelli started it off with tallies from MP Lecours and Kira Tangie and Vernelli finishing it off. 5-2 was the final score and 2-0 start to the Showcase.

The Marconi Cultural Centre Wildcats had one more game to play with a 5:30 start against North Bay Ice Boltz A. The girls where exhausted. Not to mention they did a shoot out competition before this game started between all 6 teams, the Wildcats where the winners. Meghan Gerri got the Cats on the board first to lead 1-0 after the 1st. No scoring in the second. But the Wildcats couldn’t hang on in the third and where out scored three to none to take a 3-1 loss.

The girls where back at it on Sunday morning at 11:30 against Sudbury Lady Wolves BB. Both teams scored in the 1st, Brianna Barban was the goal scorer. The Lady Wolves controlled the second and added two goals to make it 3-1. Sudbury scored again in the third, but Gerri scored for the Sault but that is all the Cats could muster to make it a 4-2 loss.

Last game of the Showcase for the Marconi Cultural Centre Wildcats vs the North Bay Ice Boltz BB. The Cats for the 5th game scored first from Vernelli. Only to see it slip away and be down 2-1 after the first. More damage in the second with two unanswered goals to put the Ice Boltz up 4-1 thru two. The Cats buried one more goal from Gerri leaving them with another 4-2 loss.

Overall the Marconi Cultural Centre Wildcats came out with a 2-3 record and a look at what the completion will be this year in the Northern Girls Midget League. League play starts this Saturday October 7th in Espanola with two games against the North Bay Boltz BB at 11:00 a.m and 2:30 p.m.
