The Soo Minor Midget Soo Thunderbirds hit the ice to open their first season in the Great North Midget Hockey League against the Timmins Majors at the John Rhodes Centre in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario on September 16th. The Majors were coming off a 5 – 4 loss to the Soo Jr Greyhounds 24 hours earlier at the Essar Centre in their 2017 – 2018 season opener.
Brock Santa Maria opened the scoring for the Thunderbirds season with the Soo’s first goal of the game at 12:26 of the first period with a pass from Mateo Perri. Riley Robitaille finds the back of Thunderbird goaltender Noah Zeppa’s net 36 seconds into the middle stanza with Frederick Leclair – Pouw and Kobe Barrette adding the contributors on Robitaille’s tying goal. Santa Maria registers his second point of the game at eight minutes even of the final period to give the Thunderbirds a 2 – 1 lead with an assist on Justin Mauro’s go – ahead goal. Carson Cavalieri fires the tying goal for Timmins at 6:03 of the period to even the game 2 – 2 with Jeremy Jeffries notching the helper on Cavalieri’s goal. At 4:06 of ovetime, Major Frederick Leclair – Pouw sinks the game winner for Timmins to give the visitors a 3 – 2 win. Cameron Svec and Austin Holmers had the contributors on Leclair – Pouw’s game winner.
“The kids battled hard right from the drop of the puck tonight and both teams played hard. We are going to continue with our plan and focus on getting better every day. Next weekend should be a lot of fun, but we have three practices before then so our focus is on the daily process right now” said Thunderbird coach Jamie Henderson.

The Thunderbirds will now host the Sudbury Minor Midgets on September 23rd at the John Rhodes Centre in a 8:00 p.m GMHL start.
