After finishing the 2016 – 2017 regular season in third place (26-7-2-1), the Soo Jr Greyhounds hit the ice on February 10th and 11th against the sixth place (8-25-0-3) Sudbury Minor Midget Wolves in AAA Great North Midget League post – season action.
On Friday evening, 1:02 into the second period, Caleb Wood finds Greyhound Parker Morgan to give the Soo a 1 – 0 lead at the John Rhodes Centre in Sault Ste Marie. Joe Mazur evens the game 1 – 1 at the 11:33 mark of the period with a pass from Carson McMillan. Bradon Caruso fires the hosts go – ahead goal at 6:07 of the second on a Soo power play with Lucas Theriault and Tristan Cicchello adding the assists. With the third goal of the game and giving the Soo a 3 – 0 lead, Wood scores an unassisted goal for the Greyhounds with 2:55 left in the second. Defenseman Kelly Quevillon and forward Parker Morgan set up Camaryn Baber’s goal to add to the Soo’s lead 17:21 into the third.
With the Wolves net empty, Cicchello brings the Greyhounds lead to 5 – 1 at the 1:09 mark of the period. With two seconds left in the contest, Wood and Tyler Nott registered the contributors on Quevillon’s power play goal to give the Greyhounds a 6 – 1 win over Sudbury. The Soo’s Garrett Boyonski earned the win to give the Greyhounds a 1 – 0 lead in the best of three series.
In game two on Saturday, the Greyhounds headed into the second game of the weekend with a 1 – 0 lead in the best of three series over the Minor Midgets. 49 seconds into the game, Owen Shier and Tyler Sayers set up Quevillon to give the Soo a 1 – 0 lead. Only 55 seconds into the middle stanza on a power play, Quevillon sinks his second of the contest to put the hosts up 2 – 0. Tyler Nott and Camaryn Baber had the assists on Quevillon’s goal. Noah Boman finds Nott to increase the Greyhounds lead to 3 – 0 at the 10:14 mark of the second. Scoring their second power play goal of the game was Bradon Caruso to give the Soo the first round win. Parker Morgan and Caleb Wood drew the helpers at 17:49 of the third. Ryan Cook made 36 saves to earn a shutout in the Soo’s 4 – 0 win.
The Greyhounds will open up round two best of five series in Sudbury on February 18th and 19th against the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves. With game times at 7:30 p.m and 3:00 p.m respectively. Game three will take place in Sault Ste Marie at the Essar Centre on February 24th in a 8:30 p.m puck drop.
