On Friday December 1st, the Lake Superior State University Lakers hosted the Alaska Nanooks in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action at the Taffy Abel Arena.
At 12:26 of the opening period, Justin Woods sinks the Nanooks first goal of the contest to give Alaska a 1 – 0 lead with Colton Leiter and James LaDouce drawing the contributors on Woods’ goal. 12 seconds later, Alaska’s Leiter gives the visitors a 2 – 0 lead at the 12:28 mark of the period. Zach Frye and Steven Jandric had the assists on Leiter’s goal. For their third goal in a minute at 12:58, Alaska’s Troy Van Tetering increases the lead to 3 – 0 with a pass from Nikolas Koberstein. Pulling LSSU within two at 15:42 of the first, Torrel Gage scores the Lakers first of the game with an assist from Diego Cuglietta. With 54 seconds left in the period and sinking his second of the game with a Nanook power play goal, Van Tetering sends Alaska into the first intermission up 4 – 1. Kylar Hope and Tyler Cline notching the helpers.
24 seconds before the halfway mark of the middle stanza, Van Tetering registers a hat trick to bring Alaska’s lead to 5 – 1. Cline had the assist on Van Tetering’s goal. With an unassisted goal, Max Kumitz scores the Lakers second of the game at 16:04 of the second period. J.T Henke finds the back of the Nanooks net on a LSSU power play 7:43 into the third with Josh Nenadal and Cuglietta adding the contributors on Henke’s power play goal. Laker goaltenders Nick Kossoff and Mitens Mareks shared the duties between the pipes with Mareks stopping five of nine shots in the first twenty minutes while Kossoff turned away 13 of 14 shots in LSSU’s 5 – 3 loss.
The Lakers will be back in action on December 2nd at Taffy Abel Arena in a 7:07 p.m puck drop against the Nanooks.
