Laker Men’s Golf Rally to Finish 3rd at Midwest Regional, Kerr and Ericson Tie for 7th

Lake Superior State men’s golf jumped from a tie for sixth place following play on Monday to a third place finish after Tuesday September 27th  final round of the Division II Midwest Regional at Harborside International. Amongst 25 teams and 125 individual golfers, the Lakers also featured a pair of individuals tying for seventh overall and two others in the top 50.

Junior Jason Kerr improved by five strokes from Monday’s round to draw into a tie with senior Joe Ericson in seventh place. Kerr (79-74) and Ericson (75-78) each totaled scores of 153 to place three strokes behind the top score of 150.

Four different individuals tied atop the leaderboard after Julien de Poyen (73-77) of Missouri- St. Louis, Luke Kelly (74-76) of Findlay and Wayne State’s Jordan Andrus (75-75) all pulled into a tie with Monday’s leader Jack Korzon (71-79) of Lewis University.

Missouri- St. Louis pulled off the top overall team score with a 614, following back-to-back rounds of 307. Fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member Findlay topped the Lakers by just four strokes, following a 305 on Tuesday to claim second place. LSSU shot a combined 310 on Tuesday and totaled 626 between both rounds to edge out another GLIAC member, Grand Valley State, by two strokes.

Gavin MacIver, fourth among the LSSU scorers from Monday, shot a 77 (+5) on Tuesday to jump up into a tie for 27th and two strokes ahead of teammate Mitchel Toth. Toth added one stroke (80-81) on Tuesday to finish with a 161 and a split for 42nd individually. Senior Zac Carson rounded out the Laker lineup with his second consecutive round of 85 to finish at 170.

“The men persevered the last two days,” said head coach Brent Pusch, delighted with his team’s performance at the regional event. “It’s definitely a pleasure to get success out of our spots 2-5, and not always needing to rely on a number one. It just goes to show how our team is capable of coming together and competing with the best.”

Citing goals of reaching postseason play in the Spring, Pusch concluded, “The regionals are critical stepping stones to getting a chance at playing in May. Laker golf just took a huge step towards that goal today.”

The next event for the Lakers comes October 10th – 11th for the second Midwest Regional, this time held at Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka, Missouri.
