Laker Men 2-0 in GLIAC Action on Road Over Cardinals, Timberwolves

Akaemji Williams posted a team-high 27 points Saturday December 9th as the 24th ranked Lake Superior State men’s basketball team defeated Northwood, 92-76, in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference action.

With the win, the Lakers run their record to 9-1 overall with a perfect 4-0 start to the GLIAC season. The Timberwolves fall to 2-6, 0-4.

LSSU shot 58.3 percent (35-of-60) from the field and 50 percent (9-of-18) from long distance in the win. NU shot 48.3 and 42.1 percent.

Lake Superior was outrebounded, 36-25, in the contest but won the turnover battle giving up just seven compared to the 15 committed by Northwood.

Williams also led the team with seven assists on the afternoon and notched his sixth 20-plus point performance of the season.

Josh Goldschmidt and Blake Marquardt each posted 11 points. Michael Nicholson led the team with six rebounds in the win.

Northwood was led offensively by David Jelinek who finished with 14 points. Trey McBride and Nate Georgeton each posted 13 points.

The 24th ranked Lake Superior State men’s basketball team handled Saginaw Valley State, 89-60, Thursday December 7th in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference road match – up.

With the win, the Lakers run their record to 8-1 overall on the season with a 3-0 clip in GLIAC play. The Cardinals fall to 2-7, 0-3.

LSSU finished the contest shooting 53 percent from the field with 52.2 percent mark from long distance. SVSU shot 54.2 and 33.3 percent on the night. Lake Superior held a, 34-25, advantage on the glass in the win.

Senior forward Michael Nicholson led the charge for the Lakers posting a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Blake Marquardt was second on the team with a season-high 14 points and 4-of-7 on triple attempts.

Senior guard Akaemji Williams dished out a team-leading seven assists on the night to go along with 10 points and four steals. Ke’Montrece Collins finished with 11 points to match a season-high.

Malik Garner led the Cardinals with 17 points and six rebounds. D.J. Hoskins tallied 11 points in the loss.

The Lakers return to GLIAC action on Saturday December 9th as they travel to Northwood (2-6, 0-3) for a match – up with the Timberwolves at 3:00 p.m.

Lake Superior returns to Bud Cooper Gymnasium December 16th (1:00 p.m.) when fifth ranked Ferris State (11-0, 3-0) comes to town for a conference showdown at 3:00 p.m.
