Laker Freshman Bindulis Agrees to Deal with Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals of the NHL announced Tuesday March 7th the signing of Lake Superior State freshman defenseman Kristofers Bindulis to a three-year entry-level contract beginning in 2017-18.

Bindulis, a native of Riga, Latvia, will report immediately to the American Hockey League affiliate of the Capitals, the Hersey Bears on an amateur tryout agreement.

In 28 games as a rookie with the Lakers in the 2016-17 season, Bindulis scored one power-play goal and registered 11 assists for 12 points to rank third among LSSU defensemen in scoring.

The 6-3, 180-pound defenseman came to LSSU via the Aston Rebels of the North American Hockey League where he registered 10 goals and 46 points in 57 games during 2015-16.

“Our staff and the Laker Hockey program would like to congratulate Kris on reaching his life-long goal of signing an NHL contract,” said LSSU head coach Damon Whitten. “We’re thrilled to continue to track his professional career and wish him the best in his future pursuits.”

Bindulis will forgo three seasons of NCAA eligibility in signing the professional contract with the Capitals. In reporting to Hersey this season, Bindulis joins former LSSU captain Domenic Monardo who was recently recalled by the Bears from the ECHL affiliate South Carolina Stingrays.
