Knights, Steelhawks Take Wins in High School Hockey Double Header

On December 3rd at the Essar Centre, the Sault Ste Marie High School League had a double header with the second place (3-1-1) Superior Heights Steelhawks taking on the fourth place (0-0-1-5) CASS Huskies followed by the first place (5-1) St. Mary’s Knights facing the third place (2-0-0-3) Korah Colts.

In game one, the Steelhawks opened the scoring at 3:44 of the second with Jacob Tulloch finding the back of Huskie goaltender Shaymus Gregory’s net to give Superior Heights a 1 – 0 lead. Ethan Johnson drew the contributor on Tulloch’s goal. With Superior Heights on a power play at 10:41 of the third, Mark Keenan and Ethan West set up Steelhawk Taylor Holub to bring the lead to 2 – 0. At 10:22 of the period with an unassisted Superior Heights goal, Elijah Yandeau increases the Steelhawk lead to 3 – 0. With 10:08 remaining in the game, Matt Quenneville sinks the lone goal for the Huskies behind Steelhawk netminder Zach Tarantini.

The Steelhawks will take their 3 – 1 win into December 4th match – up at 3:30 p.m against the St. Mary’s Knights.

The Knights took a 1 – 0 lead eight minutes into opening period with an unassisted goal scored by Josh Gavey to give St. Mary’s the lead. 5:25 into the middle stanza, Josh Mannarino gives the Knights a 2 – 0 lead at the 9:35 mark of the period with Justin Morrisette and Tyler Sayers notching the contributors on Mannarino’s goal. At 5:52, Noah Thomson adds to the lead with the Knights third of the contest with a pass from St. Mary’s Mannarino. With 3:15 remaining in the second, Jacob Bumbaco fires the Knights fourth goal behind Colt goaltender Colton Ronney. Nate Medaglia and Gavey added the helpers on Bumbaco’s goal. Registering a hat trick with an unassisted goal, Mannarino and brings St. Mary’s lead to 5 – 0 with a goal at 13:14 of the third. Zak Provenzano scores the lone goal for the Colts with 14 seconds left in the game behind Knight goaltender Travis Johnson.

Next up match – up for the Colts will be December 13th against the CASS Huskies in a 3:30 p.m puck drop.
