Knights Fall in Overtime Against the Bears at the St. Peter’s Classic

In the quarter finals at the 15th annual St. Peter’s Classic Hockey Tournament, the Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League’s (2-1) St. Mary’s Knights hit the ice against the (3-0) Orangeville District Secondary School Bears in a 9:05 a.m puck drop in Peterborough, Ontario.

33 seconds past the halfway mark of the second period on an unassisted goal, Orangeville’s Kyle Waters finds the back of Knight goaltender Travis Johnson’s net to give the Bears a 1 – 0 lead. St. Mary’s Jacob Bumbaco fires the tying goal on a Knight unassisted goal to pull the Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League leaders even 1 – 1 at the 9:02 mark of the middle stanza. At 8:24 of the third, Waters sinks the goal go – ahead goal for the Bears with a pass from Jake Auston to give Orangeville a 2 – 1 lead. Noah Brule ties the game 2 – 2 with 1:38 remaining in the game to send the Knights quarter – final into overtime. Justin Ryyppo and Nate Medgalia had the helpers on Ryckman’s tying goal. With 47 seconds left in overtime, Kyle Whitton finds the back of Cook’s net to give the Bears a 3 – 2 win over the Knights. Brandon Chasman and Waters had the contributors on Whitton’s game winner.

Knights’ coach Frank Medaglia told Saultsports that “the boys didn’t have their same “jump” for the first 2 periods. We managed to go into the third tied at one and felt good about our chances. We picked it up on the third and had some good opportunities to score, just couldn’t bury. Our team doesn’t quit…with the goalie pulled we scored late to tie it up and send it to OT where we had our chances there as well!”

“We come out of this with a sense that we can compete quite well with the teams that we may see at Ofsaa. That will help with our confidence, our goal as always, is to medal at the OFSAA AAA level. If we get there, we like our chances” said Medaglia.

St. Mary’s returns home to face the third place Korah Colts at the Essar Centre on January 14th in a 8:00 p.m start.
