Knights and Steelhawks Open 2017/18 High School Season with Wins

The 2017 – 2018 Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League opened their season on November 6th with the Korah Colts meeting the St. Mary’s Knights at McMeeken Arena while the Superior Heights Steelhawks met the CASS Huskies at the John Rhodes Centre in regular season action.

With the Colts on a power play, Ryan Fleming fires a pass to Korah’s Nik Gervasi to give the Colts a 1 – 0 lead with a goal behind St. Mary’s goaltender Travis Johnson. At 5:04 of the second period, Cole Ryckman evens the game 1 – 1 for the Knights with Tyler Sayers and Josh Mannarino drawing the helpers on Ryckman’s power play marker. With an unassisted goal with 35 second left in the period, Noah Brule finds the back of Colt netminder Colton Rooney’s net to send St. Mary’s into the first intermission up 2 – 1. Tyler Legros and Noah Sehovic register the assists on Tristen O’Flynn’s tying goal at 9:23 of the middle stanza to bring the game to 2 – 2. Noah Thomson sinks the Knights third of the game with a St. Mary’s goal behind Rooney with Sayers and Mannarino adding the contributors on Thomson’s goal with 1:35 left in the game. With Korah’s net empty, Cole Delarosbil scores the Knights fourth of the game to give St. Mary’s their first win of the season. Justin Ryyppo and Mannarino notched the helpers on Delarosbil’s goal.

At the John Rhodes Centre on Monday afternoon, Ethan West sinks the Steelhawks first goal of the game at 8:02 of the opening period with Mark Keenan and Nick Keenan setting up Superior Heights’ goal. With an unassisted power play goal, Huskie Michael Shaw finds the back of Steelhawk goaltender Jacob Patterson’s net to even the game 1 – 1. CASS’ Jack McLeod gives the Huskies a 2 – 1 lead at 3:40 of the period with a pass from Matt Quenneville. 2:30 into the second period, Superior Heights Gabe Spina fires a Steelhawk goal behind Huskie netminder Justin Shaw to tie the game 2 – 2. Jordan Reda had the helper on Spina’s goal.

Superior Heights Ethan Johnson scores the go – ahead goal for the Steelhawks at 5:41 of the second period with Josh Grosjean and Reda adding the assists. With 3:27 left in the game, Ethan Cooke draws the helper on Huskie Jack McLeod’s power play goal to send the game into overtime for the Steelhawks. At 3:36 left overtime, Christian Wilson scores the game winner for Superior Heights to give the Steelhawks a 4 – 3 win. Mark Keenan had the assist on Wilson’s winning goal.

High School hockey will be back in action on Thursday, November 9th with the Huskies taking on the Colts at the McMeekan Arena while the Knights will meet the Steelhawks at the John Rhodes Centre. Game times will be a 3:30 p.m.
